We want to change these numbers.
At Girls SySTEM, we believe that mentorship is the most important ingredient to helping you achieve your goals. Our program aims to increase diversity in the STEM workforce by pairing students in grades 7-12 with professional mentors from a diverse range of fields. In doing so, our mentees are able to acquire first-hand knowledge of STEM early on in their academic careers, which we hope will be vital in building the confidence they need in order to break into historically (and presently!) male-dominated spheres. We also promise to provide our mentees with critical insight into various STEM careers so that they are given the ability to make more informed decisions about their futures.
the percentage of women who occupy the STEM workforce—a number that has increased by only 2% since 1987.
the percentage of women in Canada enrolled in post-secondary studies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
of our mentees reported increases in their level of knowledge and awareness of STEM-related opportunities after only 1 year of participation
What our SySTEM is saying
I have had a great experience with GSM so far! It has been fascinating to learn about my mentor's research and potential STEM-related careers, as well as what to expect in university. We have also had the opportunity to talk (virtually) about what it's like to be a woman working in traditionally male-dominated fields, which is definitely relevant for me. GSM has also done a great job at engaging the networks of mentors and mentees with Zoom workshops and really interesting newsletters, interviews, panels, social media posts, etc. It has been really fun! I wold definitely recommend the program to friends and peers.

I 100% recommend GSM as its highly experienced and kind mentors can assist you in both personal and professional development!
