DEI: The Big Questions in STEM

Who’s included?

Who’s missing?

What barriers do people face?

How do we build solutions for everyone?

How does identity shape opportunity?

What does real access look like?

The Unity+ Stream addresses these questions and explores the role that diversity plays within different STEM fields.

Girls SySTEM Mentorship was integral for my foundation as a girl in STEM. As a past mentee from 2020-2022, I learned a lot about STEM pathways and skills from their workshops ranging from University Prep to Women in STEM panels. I had the chance to meet numerous mentors and learn more about different STEM fields, inspiring me to pursue more than I thought was possible. My experience as a mentee enhanced my passions and knowledge, supporting my journey as an upper-year Life Sciences student at the University of Toronto. The Girls SySTEM Mentorship community is incredibly supportive, and it had always inspired me to learn and explore STEM.

As the current UNITY+ Stream Coordinator of Girls SySTEM Mentorship, I hope to elevate the mentee experience through the Diversi-STEM conference, establishing a space for innovation and inclusion.

The first Diversi-STEM took place in 2025 with a virtual panel and an in-person conference event. I was truly inspired by how the attendees engaged in discussions and activities, showing their dedication to learn about diversity in STEM.

The second Diversi-STEM conference, Diversi-STEM: Beyond Borders, will explore how STEM innovations can transcend borders, whether it is through art or across populations.

With more hands-on workshops and an infographic submission for mentees, this year's theme will give mentees the chance to think outside the box and apply their thinking to creative activities!
