Sophia Adams-Jang

Sophia is a graduating student from Toronto who will be attending the University of British Columbia this fall to study Engineering within the Faculty of Applied Science. Throughout high school, she has been an active member of her school's robotics team and strings council, balanced academics with tutoring, and pursued her musical passions through piano and cello. Sophia is driven by a desire to merge robotics and earth sciences into a career that promotes safer, more sustainable practices between human development and the environment. Outside the classroom, she enjoys sailing, running, biking, and painting.

Reflecting on her time with GSM, Sophia shared:

"Girls SySTEM made a huge impact on my final year of high school and helped me build my confidence, find a supportive community, and discover the many paths available in STEM. Through the program, I was able to connect with an incredible engineer who gave me valuable insight into what a career in engineering can look like and really helped solidify my desire to pursue that path. She walked me through the process of designing and beginning the manufacturing phase of a project she was working on, which gave me a real-world perspective on the field. Attending events hosted by the organization was also an amazing experience. Meeting women and girls who share the same passion for STEM was incredibly inspiring, and learning about the unique research, careers, and opportunities across different STEM fields really expanded my worldview. Girls SySTEM is an amazing and inspiring organization, and I hope that one day I can return as a mentor to help support the next generation of girls in STEM."

Sophia Yang

Sophia, from Toronto, has a strong passion for STEM and biotechnology. This fall, she will begin her studies in the Integrated Science program at McMaster University, where she hopes to one day pursue a PhD and a career in research at the intersection of biology and engineering. For the past two years, she has volunteered with the Science Club at Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital, helping spark a love of science in kids with developmental disabilities. Outside of her academic pursuits, Sophia enjoys swimming, baking, and reading.

Reflecting on her time with GSM, Sophia shared:

"I am very appreciative of my experience with Girls SySTEM Mentorship due to all of the opportunities and impact it has had on my life. I gained an amazing mentor whom I think I will continue to contact. Through this program, I was exposed to new opportunities, careers, and supportive role models that changed how I see my future. Being around powerful women like the mentors, mentees, and women in the events inspired me to embrace challenges."
