"I love the challenge of each day being different and in being able to collaborate with other doctors to find solutions to complex issues with our patients. There is both an art and science to dentistry that I love plus I get to be my own boss!"
Tell us a little bit about yourself and how you created @betweenfloss
I am a dentist. I have a practice in Dallas, TX that specializes in comprehensive and restorative dentistry. I collaborate with other doctors and specialists to provide quality care for my patients. In my work have found that flossing is a pretty inexpensive and easy way to keep teeth healthy for a lifetime. I wanted to make it more convenient and fun. So many people use lip balm, I thought it would be the perfect pair. I am coming out with a new floss pick design and already have another counter top refillable floss dispenser.
How did your passion for entrepreneurship and wellness develop through your cosmetic dentist career? What do you love most about dentistry?
My father owned 2 pharmacies. I worked for him and knew I wanted to work for myself. I bought my first office in 2006 and grew to 2 offices with associates but recently sold that business so I could create a more cosmetic and holistic practice and work on my product development. I love the challenge of each day being different and in being able to collaborate with other doctors to find solutions to complex issues with our patients. There is both an art and science to dentistry that I love plus I get to be my own boss!
"A love of learning can be cultivated by finding things that interest you and looking beyond the surface."
How do you believe we can inspire more young girls to pursue STEM or more specially a career in dentistry?
If girls are interested in dentistry, ask their dentist questions. Look to see if there are any online training resources. Some offices will even consider offering a position as an intern or sterilization assistant to someone who wants to learn more. A lot is changing in the field and it’s important to have an interest in learning. I attend multiple session of continuing education a year. A love of learning can be cultivated by finding things that interest you and looking beyond the surface. Ask why questions and look to mentors for help.
"Understanding risk and believing in your ability to overcome challenges is critical to success."
What challenges have you faced throughout your journey and what coping mechanisms have you/ and do you rely on to overcome these difficulties?
One of the larger challenges I have faced was the decision to start a business, more than once! Understanding risk and believing in your ability to overcome challenges is critical to success. I have learned to accept that I don't know everything I need succeed, but I am open to listening to others. Finding a mentor can pay a big role in gaining the confidence to push through hard times. Insight from people on the outside of your situation is critical, don't discount the advice of those who love and support you!
Did mentorship played a role in your journey towards becoming a cosmetic dentist? If so, how?
Yes, it has. Finding the proper training has been key. They teach the basics in school. Lifelong learning and a commitment to continued growth is so important in being your best. Don't be afraid to ask a question, you aren't the only one who doesn't know, just in asking, you may help someone who doesn't have the confidence to speak up! I hope to be a mentor to others the way so many have been to me. Look for mentors outside of your field, and even personal mentors. My friends have provided needed support and mentorship in their own way.
What has been your biggest achievement to date?
I have 2 wonderful children. Being able to have them and still grow and run my businesses is one of my biggest achievements. I also have a US patent and have seen something I drew on a piece of paper become a product. That's cool (my kiddos think so too) :)
What are 3 key messages you hope to convey to the youth today?
1. Be curious, but know all the answers in life are not found on your phone. Work to cultivate a goal of lifelong learning
2. Interact with people you don't know. Find a mentor, talk to older people, create connections that are personal.
3. Go outside! Take time to be out of your element. Sometime your greatest revelations happen when you aren't trying to have them, when you are out of your comfort zone.
